Elizabeth Fillingham

Solicitor

I am an assistant solicitor in the wills and probate department at Hancock Quins Solicitors in Watford, having joined the firm in February 2018.

I advise people in and around Hertfordshire who are considering how to best prepare their finances and other arrangements for the future, for themselves and their families.

A large part of my work involves helping people who are looking to make a will, either as an individual or as a couple This may be to ensure their spouse and children are provided for after they die, or they may want to nominate a guardian for their children. I also advise on the inheritance tax implications of the provisions they are making.

I have a background in mental health law, which means I am well equipped to advise on issues surrounding mental capacity and assessments of mental capacity. This experience makes me well placed to advise clients on making a will or lasting powers of attorney.

I pride myself on my attention to client care and with a focus on safeguarding some of the most vulnerable members of society, I approach delicate issues with the sensitivity and understanding they require.

This often includes advising people who would like to make their wishes clear in case they lose physical or mental capacity in the future on making lasting powers of attorney. This involves nominating someone to act as an attorney to make decisions on their behalf regarding their health and welfare or financial affairs, or both.

My role involves preparing and drafting documents, dealing with enquiries and liaising with official bodies such as the Office of the Public Guardian to keep everything on track for:

  • making a will;
  • lasting powers of attorney - health and welfare;
  • lasting powers of attorney - property and financial affairs;
  • probate; and
  • administration of estates

I also advise and oversee the administration of estates, which can be a complex process at a difficult time. I approach with sensitivity and try to reduce the burden on recently bereaved families by applying for probate, preparing the estate accounts on behalf of the executors, gathering in the assets and submitting inheritance tax returns.

In my spare time, I enjoy attending shows at the many theatres in and around London, reading and visiting new countries.
